Hometown Hero - Terry Fox Lookout

We call Terry Fox our “Hometown Hero” because he grew up in Kara’s hometown of Port Coquitlam, BC. And he has a connection to the entire country through his Marathon of Hope. Many Canadians feel like he’s their local hero, no matter where they grew up.

There are monuments to Terry Fox literally from Coast to Coast - in St. John’s Newfoundland, where he began his run on April 12, 1980, in Port Coquitlam, BC, where he grew up, in Vancouver, where the Marathon of Hope route ended… and the Terry Fox Lookout, near where he ended his run in August 1980 on the outskirts of Thunder Bay.

That’s Kara in the illustration, from a photo taken on one of many visits here over the last 20 years!

In the 45 years since Terry Ran his Marathon of Hope, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $800 million !! for cancer research. Millions of participants in over 60 countries have made the annual Terry Fox Run the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.

The lookout has a statue created by sculptor Manfred Pirwitz and has a stunning view of the Sleeping Giant, another spot worth a stop when you’re passing by Thunder Bay.
