Komarno, Manitoba - Mosquito Capital of the World!
About an hour north of Winnipeg, in the township of Rockwood, is the community of Komarno which proudly calls itself the Mosquito Capital of the World.
Komarno means "lots of mosquitoes" in Ukrainian. And the residents embraced their plagues of mosquitoes by building a 15-foot tall (4.6 m) mosquito statue.
Making it even scarier - the Komarno mosquito moves! It is a weather vane and it rotates with the wind. At least it doesn’t bite!
In 2023, a local entomologist (insect expert) partnered with OFF! and featured the town in a bug spray commercial. If it works in Komarno, it’ll work anywhere, right?
